The Impact of Fuel Price on Large Jet Operating Cost and Scale Economies (University of California Transportation Center)

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

http://repositories.cdlib.org/uctc/884_summer_2009/

“This study uses a well-established aviation operating cost modeling technique to capture the effect of aircraft size and fuel prices on large jet operating costs. It is found that economies of aircraft size exist yet attenuate for aircraft sizes larger than the average. It is further found that as fuel price increases, economies of aircraft operating cost due to size attenuate. To understand what these effects have on aircraft operating cost, operating cost for different aircraft sizes and stage lengths are generated for a range of fuel price scenarios.” [Source: DocuTicker, 29-09-09]

“ ‘The Corporate Equality Index 2010 shows that, even in the most challenging economy, leading employers are forging ahead of federal and state law to recruit and retain a diverse workforce — regardless of employees’ sexual orientation and gender identity or expression,’ said Human Rights Campaign Foundation President Joe Solmonese. ‘While [the US] Congress considers a federal law that prohibits workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, businesses can take immediate steps to ensure all employees in their workforce are treated fairly today’.” [Source: Docuticker, 22-09-09]

http://asiafoundation.org/publications/pdf/603

“Released in September 2009, this 127-page report … is based on a nationwide opinion poll that was conducted in 26 provinces across Thailand. The intent of the poll was to gauge the national mood toward election reform, participation in politics, amending the constitution, and more. The results were rather interesting, and the report notes that the Thai electorate remains pessimistic about the overall direction of the country, and at the center of this pessimism is the current constitution.” [Source: The Scout Report, 25-09-09]

6th Annual Postgraduate Researchers in Science Medicine: last call for papers

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

“PRISM is an established and successful annual conference showcasing healthcare and biomedical science research in the North West and has been designed specifically for postgraduate researchers. The PRISM conferences provide an excellent opportunity to present work, discuss common issues and meet other researchers working in the medical sciences. PRISM 2009 for postgraduate researchers in the North West, is jointly organised by The University of Manchester and Vitae North West Hub. This year’s keynote speaker at the conference will be Prof Jane Worthington, Professor of Chronic Disease Genetics and Scientific Director and Deputy Director of the ARC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Manchester. Jane will talk about the importance of research and the value of a PhD.

THE AIMS OF PRISM:
* To showcase healthcare and biomedical science research in the North West
* To offer networking and career development opportunities for postgraduate research students (MPhil, PhD, MD, MRes) to meet colleagues, students and invited professionals
* To encourage collaboration across institutions and disciplines
* To enable students to present a poster or talk on their own research or other aspects of the postgraduate research experience

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The conference will offer an opportunity for you to share your research ideas, receive feedback on your presentations and give ample opportunity for you to network with other postgraduates from across the North West. In the afternoon there will be a series of workshops allowing you to explore both future career options and opportunities for skills development. Workshops will cover topics such as:
* How to survive a viva
* Using web 2.0 to enhance your research
* Presentation skills: Feel the fear and do it anyway
* Constructive and creative thinking
* Publish or perish ? navigating the peer review process
* Managing your PhD supervisor
* Postdoctoral perspectives

HISTORY OF PRISM
PRISM was founded in 2004 by the University of Liverpool and the NW Hub of UKGRAD which became Vitae in 2008. Since then, PRISM has been hosted by universities across the North West on an annual basis. The 2009 conference will be held at The University of Manchester and is delivered in collaboration with the Vitae NE Hub.

TO VIEW THE FULL PROGRAMME AND TO REGISTER FOR THIS FREE CONFERENCE, VISIT THE VITAE WEBSITE.

CALL FOR PAPERS
We now invite students to submit abstracts of work to be presented either as a poster or in a 10 minute talk (plus an additional 5 minutes for questions)
* Presentations or posters should be about your own research experience: please pitch this for a GENERAL biomedical/healthcare audience
* You should consider the processes you have used in your research and how these may be of interest to other researchers, or how other researchers could help you
* You may wish to discuss a particular research methodology you have used and how this may be applied in a wider context to research in healthcare / biomedical science
* Alternatively, your presentation could be on some aspect of the postgraduate research experience, e.g. reflections on the relationship between your research and your professional practice or career development.

TO SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT FOR PRISM 2009, COMPLETE THE ONLINE SUBMISSION FORM.
