Guide for
external students
First, a definition...
External students are students who are registered for an MMU award,
but enrolled for their course with one of our partner institutions.
In this case,
your home institution is normally charged
with meeting your library/information requirements. However, in order to
help you to access a wider range of materials for background reading,
you can also visit any of the MMU libraries, or use some of our electronic
resources remotely: unfortunately, we can't offer access
to all of our resources due to the licensing restrictions of the suppliers.
The information on this page applies only to external students
as defined above.
If you are
any other kind of visitor, for example using MMU
Library through one of the following schemes:
- NOWAL (North West academic libraries)
- SCONUL Access
- Open University
- Other university students
... you should read our information for visitors.
Electronic services available to external students
- Subscribed electronic resources
available to external students
- This is a listing of the subscribed electronic resources (ie services
for which we pay) which you are entitled to access under MMU's current
licence terms and conditions. Permission has been granted for remote
usage in support of your academic studies only. Please note that IDs,
passwords and usernames are provided for your personal use of these systems,
and must not be shared or divulged deliberately or inadvertently.
This
list does not include any resources which are freely available to anyone
on the internet, for instance Google
Scholar, Intute or UK
government information.
- Log in instructions
- These instructions include
information on how to contact your faculty Information
Systems team, who handle all password-related problems: you should
contact the
team responsible for the MMU faculty running your course. We would
also draw your attention to the Log
in
troubleshooting guide, which
lists common problems and their solutions, including who to contact.
It's possible to change your
network password online using the MMU
Self-Service Portal.
- EndNote bibliographic management
software
- You are
permitted to purchase a copy of the EndNote bibliographic management software
package at the discount price
allowed to UK Higher Education. Login to the Adept
Scientific website if
you wish to do this. From October
2006, you will also have access to the
web version, EndNoteWeb.
Using the physical library
If you wish to visit the Library to look at hard copy materials, please
note that you will need to bring your MMU External Student ID card.
This allows you access for reference purposes, but also allows you to borrow
up to 4
long loan items for up to 4 weeks, but not short or week loan items which
may, however, be used in the Library. Alternatively you can photocopy material,
subject to copyright regulations. Please use the GPAS payment kiosks in or
around libraries to credit your photocopying account.
