EndNote Web

What is EndNote Web?

EndNote Web is an online bibliographic management software package that will help you to control your references and create bibliographies easily and automatically.

EndNote Web offers the following features:

  • Save, organise and edit up to 10,000 references in your personal library;
  • Ability to download directly from a number of databases;
  • Format bibliographies, including using the MMU Harvard style;
  • Facility allowing you to share references with groups of collaborators;
  • Use the Cite While You Write function in Word; this allows you to pull in references from your library and the program will automatically cite and reference in the style you choose.

Additional functionality is available within the full Endnote program, on which you can find more information at the bottom of the page.

Registering for EndNote Web

In order to register for an EndNote Web account you must be a student or a member of staff at MMU. If you are registering on campus you need only follow the on-screen instructions. If you would like to create an account from an off-campus PC please follow the instructions on the FAQ page.

Please note: Your access to this resource is only authorised while your MMU network account is live. Unless you make other provision your references will be lost on the expiration of your MMU account.

Is training available?

Library staff run introductory EndNote Web courses throughout the year. Topics covered include:

  • The basics of building a library manually;
  • Building a library automatically by searching a database and importing references;
  • Using Cite While You Write to create citations and reference lists automatically within Word documents.

A list of scheduled courses is available. We can also organise courses for groups of staff and students upon request. Please contact the EndNote trainer at your campus:

How do I buy a copy for home use?

MMU staff and students may purchase a personal copy of the software for off-campus use on their own PCs at a discount. If you wish to purchase the software online, login to the Adept Scientific website  log in with your MMU ID and password and choose the product that you are interested in purchasing.

The EndNote installation doesn't include the output style for the MMU Harvard standard which has been added to MMU network PCs.We have made this file available for download via the link below. Once you have downloaded the file, copy it to the Styles folder within your EndNote program installation.

Open Source alternatives to EndNote

Although EndNote and EndNote Web are the only bibliographic software packages purchased and supported by MMU, there are alternatives. Proprietary products include Reference Manager (Thomson Reuter) and RefWorks (ProQuest). Open source software is also available; for example, Zotero, Mendeley and Connotea. We regret that library staff are unable to provide advice on selecting or support in using alternatives to EndNote and EndNote Web.

Using the MMU Harvard output style

An MMU Harvard output style is available within Endnote Web and Endnote (on campus). It is listed under MMU Harvard and Harvard MMU. The MMU Harvard output style matches the requirements for the MMU referencing standard.

If you have bought a personal copy of EndNote you can download the output style here:

The following instructions for the manual input of references sets out the Endnote reference type you need to use for specific sources. Specific "fields" are also indicated where it is not obvious where certain elements of a reference should be input.

NB: These instructions should be used in conjunction with the MMU Harvard referencing guide and prior knowledge and experience of using Endnote is required.
