Subject coverage: Casweb is part of the Census Dissemination Unit on the Census.ac.uk website. It provides statistical information from the 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 UK Censuses. In due course it is anticipated that data from the census scheduled for 2011 will also be incorporated.

This site provides links to materials which are being developed to support the use of census data in learning and teaching. All learning and teaching materials are freely available for use by UK HE and FE sites and are customisable. They are being developed in consultation with users throughout the community. If you're using the service off-campus you will need to login to prove that you are a member of a UK Higher or Further Education institution. On the CHCC login page, use the drop-down menu under the heading Universities to locate Manchester Metropolitan University. Then select Go. You will be presented with the MMU login screen and should input your MMU network ID and password to gain access.

Available free to UK HE academics via MIMAS, EPSD is an annually updated database of UK neighbourhood statistics. The Experian database provides access to a range of local area statistics covering geo-demographics, demography, property transactions and car ownership for current postal sectors together with associated digital boundaries.

"An electronic database of gender statistics and indicators designed with user-friendly, menu-driven features. It offers statistical and other data in modules on several subjects. The data in each module is presented in ready-to-use format. Users have the option of saving the country views in Excel (or another spreadsheet software) to customize them for their own reports."

"Provides a national service for the acquisition, dissemination and re-use of social sciences qualitative research data. It is a specialist unit housed within the UK Data Archive (UKDA) at the University of Essex. Together with the UKDA, the Service works with the ESRC to operate its Datasets Policy that exists to enhance the potential use of research data arising out of ESRC funded projects. Qualidata offers specialist advice on research project management, issues of confidentiality and consent, and documentation of data with regard to archiving data. It further offers a resource discovery hub via both the UKDA online catalogue and its own online catalogue, Qualicat, enabling users to locate accessible sources of qualitative data across the UK."

"UKBORDERS provides digitised boundary datasets of the UK, available in many Geographic Information System (GIS) formats (MapInfo MIF/MID, ArcView Shape, Arc/Info Export and several others) for teachers and researchers in the UK Higher and Further Education community to download and use in their work ... There are many digitised boundaries available. The main group of boundaries available correspond to the various levels of 2001 and 1991 Census geography which are designed to be used for spatial visualisation and analysis of Census statistics. Also available are environmental boundaries from various sources and historic boundaries created by the Great Britain Historic GIS Project, based at Portsmouth University."
To login to UKBORDERS, follow the link to Login via UK Federation on the UKBORDERS website. Select Manchester Metropolitan University from the drop-down menu and then click the Select button. You will be taken to an MMU login screen where you may input your MMU ID and password. Do not follow the Athens link as MMU no longer uses this form of authentication.
In order to access the data, you will also need to register individually with the UK Data Archive (UKDA) Census service. When you request data from UKBORDERS, the service will direct you to "the UKDA Census registration page where you can accept or reject the necessary terms. There is usually a delay of up to 24 hours before the updated UKDA registration becomes active. This means you will not be able to proceed with your request immediately". UKBORDERS recommends that you register and "then return the UKBorders application after some time to check if the registration has become active".

The World Health Organization Statistical Information System describes statistical and epidemiological data and information presently available from the World Health Organization and elsewhere. Where possible WHOSIS provides access to this information. WHOSIS allows searches by keyword through the entire WHO website, and globally throughout the WWW.
