EndNote information

These EndNote instructions may differ depending on whether you are on or off-campus and on the browser you are using. If the instructions do not work please refer to the EndNote or Endnote Web help pages.

  1. Run your search and mark the references you want to transfer to EndNote/EndNote Web.
  2. Hover over the Export/Save option and a box giving further option will appear.
  3. Choose to export to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager and a dialog box will open.
  4. You will be asked to choose what to include in the reference. Choose Citation/Abstract, to get as much information transferred to your EndNote/EndNote Web reference as possible. Click on continue.
  5. Save the file and give it an easily recognisable name, making sure you keep it as a .RIS file.
  6. Now go to your EndNote/EndNote Web library.

For EndNote, use the following steps:

  1. Open your Endnote Library and then click on File, then Import, then File, at which point an Import file box will open.
  2. Choose the file you saved, and then select RefMan RIS as your Import Option, then click on Import.
  3. Your references will be filed in your unfiled section, from where they can be marked and transferred to another group as required.

For EndNote Web, use the following steps:

  1. Click on the yellow Collect tab, and choose the Import references option.
  2. Browse and find the file you saved, and then choose RefMan RIS as your Import option.
  3. Finally choose the group you want to put the records into, ie into unfiled, into a group you have already created, or into a new group.
  4. Click on Import and your records will now be in your EndNote Web library.

You may find there are a couple of oddities:

  • For journal article references, the start page and the page range may be imported into the same box.
  • For book references, the place of publication may appear in the publisher field.

This can be rectified by editing individual records accordingly.
