Subject databases and full-text resources

BAILII (British and Irish Legal Information Institute)

Available within MMU and outside MMU (no login required)

BAILII offers free access to case law and legislation from various British and Irish courts and legislatures, with a single search engine. It currently includes 42 databases from 7 jurisdictions. Including the Court of Appeal of England and Wales; the Irish Supreme Court; the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal; Scottish Court of Session and High Court; Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and the House of Lords and the European Union as well as full-text legislation databases from Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Also on BAILII are Law Commission publications and tribunal decisions from tribunals such as the Employment Appeals Tribunal, the Immigration Appeals Tribunal and VAT & Duties Tribunals, to name a few.

CommonLII

CommonLII allows browsing and searching of 464 databases from 50 Commonwealth and common law countries and territories, including legislation, case law and law reform information.

Criminal Justice Periodicals Index

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

Subject coverage: Criminal law and criminology, juvenile justice, police studies and prison administration.
Date range: 1998 -, 1975 - 1998 is available at Gaskell in hard copy only.

Data retrieved: An index to US, British and Canadian journals. In some cases, the article is available in full text

Family Law Online

Subject coverage: Family law cases, journal articles, commentary and procedure. Journal coverage includes Family Law Journal, Child and Family Law Quarterly and International Family Law. The latest editions of Hershman and McFarlane: Children Law and Practice, Duckworth: Matrimonial Property and Finance and Emergency Remedies in the Family Courts are included plus the Family Law Reports and Family Court Practice.

JustCite

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

JustCite is a multi-source legal search engine and citator service. JustCite links to content from a range of publishers and includes links to full-text material on leading online services, including LexisLibrary, Westlaw and BAILII. It indexes over 425,000 cases, including transcripts and unreported judgments. In addition it cross-links between cases, legislation and journal articles from a variety of publishers, giving a full amendment trail for UK and EU legislation.

On-campus authentication is by IP Address, so there is no need to log in on-campus.

Off-campus users need to login by following the Your Home Institution link and typing Manchester Metropolitan University into the provided box. Select Manchester Metropolitan University from the list that appears below. You will then be redirected to the MMU login page where you may input your MMU network username and password.

Data retrieved: Seventy percent of the database consists of periodical articles.
Access notes: There are limits to the numbers of people who can use this service at any one time. If you are denied access, it may be that the maximum number has been reached. Try again in 15 minutes or so.

Contains information previously found in Current Legal Information.
Access notes:

  • If you are having trouble accessing Westlaw off-campus, make sure that Cookies are enabled on your PC. (Note: A "cookie" is a small amount of information that a web site copies to your hard disk. A cookie can help a web site identify you the next time you visit.)
  • When logging in, if you receive an error message, please delete your cookies and temporary Internet files (cache) and try again.
  • Any problems with this database should be referred to the library staff at Business and Law, All Saints Library. If they are unavailable and you continue to have problems accessing Westlaw, please use this freephone number to contact the Westlaw helpdesk team directly: 0800 028 2200. They should be able to resolve your problem.
  • NB There is currently a glitch in the Westlaw web site. If you log into Westlaw but remain inactive for 30 minutes, the site will automatically log you out. You can NOT click on the Begin a new Westlaw UK research session link that appears in order to re-log in because it takes you to an error page. Instead, please re-access Westlaw via a link on the Library web site or catalogue. Westlaw are aware of this problem and hope to have it fixed soon.
