American Chemical Society

To use ACS journals off-campus, you will need to log in. Using the link above, this is straightforward, however if you are linking to an ACS journal via Find it! or from the library catalogue, please follow these steps:

  1. First follow the link to Login.
  2. Do not input your username/password in the login boxes. Instead, follow the link to Shibboleth Login.
  3. Under the text To log in using your institution's credentials, select a geographic region, use the drop-down menu to locate UK Higher Education.
  4. Click on UK Higher Education.
  5. Click on Select.
  6. Scroll down the list of UK Higher Education institutions and follow the link to Manchester Metropolitan University.
  7. You will be taken to the MMU login screen where you may input your MMU network username and password.
  8. As confirmation that you have logged in, you will see Subscriber access provided by MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY at the top left-hand side of the ACS website.

British Standards Online

Available within MMU and outside MMU (login required)

Subject coverage: Standards
Data retrieved: Full text of all current British and adopted International Standards.
Access notes: After logging in, select the Click here for our institutional login link near the bottom of the page to access the Standards' search screen. Searching is done either by Standard Number or by Keyword and there is an option on the Advanced Search screen to search the full BSI catalogue or to search within MMU's subscription. To view the full-text of a Standard select the Open document link and a PDF of the document will download.

If you have problems downloading the PDF on campus then either save the PDF to your H: area before opening it or try using Mozilla Firefox browser.

Criminal Justice Periodicals Index

The database includes individual sections for all subject areas of law which include specific resources for each subject. Alerts and current awareness updates can also be set up using this database.

Reaxys

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

Subject coverage: chemical information, with areas of interest for engineers, materials scientists, pharmacists, and biological scientists.
Updated: Quarterly
Data retrieved: Over 7.5 million organic compounds and over 1 million inorganic materials including alloys, ceramics and glasses. Users can search directly by exact or sub-structure or by searching one or more of over 800 text and numerical fields. Also incorporates 10 million reaction records. Five million of these reactions can be searched directly, by drawing reactants, products or full reactions.

Access notes: As this is a subscription service, access is restricted to MMU staff and students.

  1. Follow the Access from Outside MMU link.
  2. Follow the link to Login on the Reaxys website.
  3. A new page opens: do not input any details in the login boxes which are displayed.
  4. Instead, click on the GO button to the right of Institution Login.
  5. Under Select Your Region or Group, use the drop-down menu and select UK Access Management Federation.
  6. A list of institutions appears: follow the link to Manchester Metropolitan University.
  7. You will be redirected to the MMU login page where you may enter your MMU network username and password.

Royal Society of Chemistry Journals

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

Full-text electronic access is available to MMU staff and students for those RSC journals to which the MMU Library has a print subscription.
The following titles are available electronically:

To access articles from this resource off-campus or via the Library catalogue or Find it! please follow these steps:

  • Click on the article that you wish to access.
  • Under Subscribers, select whether you would like to view the article in PDF or HTML format (where the option exists).
  • Under Alternative logins click on the link to The UK Access Management Federation.
  • Under Select your home organisation choose Manchester Metropolitan University from the drop down list and click on the Select button.
  • On the MMU Login Page, enter your username and password in the boxes as prompted and click the Login button.

Science Citation Index

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

Subject coverage: The Sciences.
Date range: 1981-
Data retrieved: Searchable author abstracts. It indexes more than 5,700 major journals across 164 scientific disciplines, covering approximately 2,100 more journals than its SCI print and CD-ROM counterparts, with all cited references captured.
Access notes: Science Citation Index is accessed via Web of Knowledge.

ScienceDirect

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

Subject coverage: Life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences.
Data retrieved: Mainly full text, with some bibliographic references, from almost 1300 Elsevier Science journals. Full text availability is shown with a green card icon to the left of the record.
Date coverage: most journals are available from 1997 to the present. A few journals, to which MMU has purchased backfiles, begin with the first volume published.
Access notes: To use all the facilities this service offers, you will need to log in, even on campus. For off-campus use, you will need to register individually the first time you log in.

When logging in, please follow these instructions:

  1. Click the Login link on the top right hand corner of the page.
  2. Follow the Go to Athens/Institution Login link below the username/password boxes. DO NOT input your username/password into these boxes.
  3. Select UK Access Management Federation from the Select your location drop down menu on the left.
  4. Then click on Manchester Metropolitan University in the list of institutions that appears below.
  5. You are then taken to the MMU login page where you can enter your login details as normal.

Full-text articles are available in both HTML and PDF.

Subject coverage: Abstract and citation database covering over 15,000 peer-reviewed titles from more than 4,000 international publishers in the sciences and social sciences

Access notes: The Download Document function is available on-campus only.

To log into Scopus:

  1. Click the Login link on the top-right hand corner of the page.
  2. In the box that appears, click the Athens / Other Institution login link at the bottom.
  3. Select UK Access Management Federation from the drop down menu on the left.
  4. Then click on Manchester Metropolitan University in the list of institutions that appears on the right.
  5. Users are then taken to the MMU login page where they can enter their details as normal.

Web of Science

Subject coverage:Web of Science provides access to the ISI Citation Indexes:

  • Conference Proceedings Citation Index- Science -1990-
  • Science Citation Index - 1970-
  • Social Sciences Citation Index - 1970-
  • Arts and Humanities Citation Index - 1975-

These combine to form a large multidisciplinary database which indexes articles from over 10,000 journals in the sciences, social sciences and arts as well as references from over 120,000 conference proceedings. Web of Science also includes a cited reference search option. See below for details.
Data retrieved: Mainly bibliographic references, with a small number of full text.

Access notes: Web of Science is accessed via the Web of Knowledge portal. Click on the yellow Web of Science database tab to access the database and Cited Reference Search resources.

Cited Reference Search

Cited Reference Search allows you to find more recent articles that cite a previously published paper. You may search each database individually or you may search all three at once. This is particularly useful for multidisciplinary subjects. This type of searching often locates relevant articles that cannot be retrieved through traditional subject-author searching. A helpsheet providing full instructions on how to run cited reference searches is available for downloading (92k PDF, 16k HTML).

Westlaw

Subject coverage: Law
Updated: Daily
Data retrieved: UK, EU and International caselaw, legislation and journal articles. Much of the information is available in full text. Also includes Civil Procedure, Intellectual Property, Human Rights and Current Awareness materials, plus IDS Employment Law Handbooks, and IDS Employment Law Briefs. Contains information previously found in Current Legal Information.
Access notes:

  • If you are having trouble accessing Westlaw off-campus, make sure that Cookies are enabled on your PC. (Note: A "cookie" is a small amount of information that a web site copies to your hard disk. A cookie can help a web site identify you the next time you visit.)
  • When logging in, if you receive an error message, please delete your cookies and temporary Internet files (cache) and try again.
  • Any problems with this database should be referred to the library staff at Business and Law, All Saints Library. If they are unavailable and you continue to have problems accessing Westlaw, please use this freephone number to contact the Westlaw helpdesk team directly: 0800 028 2200. They should be able to resolve your problem.
  • NB There is currently a glitch in the Westlaw web site. If you log into Westlaw but remain inactive for 30 minutes, the site will automatically log you out. You can NOT click on the Begin a new Westlaw UK research session link that appears in order to re-log in because it takes you to an error page. Instead, please re-access Westlaw via a link on the Library web site or catalogue. Westlaw are aware of this problem and hope to have it fixed soon.

Wiley Online Library

Subject coverage: Multidisciplinary, including the social sciences, arts and humanities
Date range: 1996 to date
Data retrieved: Full-text articles from approximately 1100 journals (including 800 titles formerly published Blackwell Synergy) plus 29 electronic books
Access notes: If you have trouble accessing the full text of an article, check the "cookie" settings on your browser. It must be set to accept cookies. Use the Help option on your browser to find instructions on how to do this.

If you're trying to login to an individual Wiley journal via the links on the library catalogue or Find It! ejournals list, you'll need to follow these instructions in order to get to the MMU login page:

  1. Follow the link as normal from the library catalogue or the Find It! ejournals list.
  2. The journal website will open.
  3. At the top-right of the page, there is a link called INSTITUTIONAL LOGIN. Follow this link.
  4. Important: Type the whole phrase Manchester Metropolitan University, without shortening it to Manchester or MMU, in the box called Institution Name.
  5. Choose the result called Manchester Metropolitan University, not the ones called JISC - Manchester Metropolitan University (Athens) or Manchester Metropolitan University - MMU - UK - (Athens).
  6. You will then be taken to the MMU Login screen where you may input your MMU ID and password and then click Login.
  7. Once logged in, you will be taken to the Wiley Online Library homepage where you can locate the journal you require using the Search box on the left-hand side.

ZETOC

Available within MMU (no login required) and outside MMU (login required)

Subject Coverage: multidisciplinary
Date Range: 1993 to date

Data Retrieved: Bibliographic references to the contents of over 20,000 journals and 70,000 conference proceedings
Service Provider: MIMAS/British Library
Access Notes: In addition to searching the database, ZETOC allows you to set up an individualised Table of Contents alerting service. Select up to 50 individual journal titles and you will be notified via e-mail of the contents of new issues as they become available.
Basic keyword searches can also be saved in order to be alerted to new articles on particular topics.
A document delivery service is available. This allows you to order articles for delivery direct to your mailing address. You will be responsible for payment and will be required to submit personal details, including your credit card number, over the web. Please note that this is a much more expensive service than the Library's Interlibrary Loan service
To use the Alert services both on- and off-campus, this resource requires a login.
